Welcome to Holistic Functional Nutritional Therapy!

The majority of chronic conditions are due to imbalances caused by poor diet, lack of exercise, unhealthy habits, and environmental factors. Genetics also plays a role, but according to Epigenetics, you can switch certain genes on or off.

Although there's no magic pill or one-size-fits-all when it comes to our health, there are certain fundamentals that, when followed, allow our body's innate ability to bring us back to Homeostasis, the state of optimal physiological functioning, aka good health!

My approach to this is MoRFFH: Movement, Relaxation, Food, Fun, Hydration

*Although nutrition plays a very important role in mental health, any mental, behavioral, or emotional disorders should be evaluated by a licensed mental health practitioner prior to beginning any program. If appropriate, HiH can communicate with your mental health therapist to design a nutrition plan that works cohesively with your therapy.

Hydration

Water, glorious water! You can survive weeks without food, but mere days without water. Water assists blood travel throughout your body, delivers necessary oxygen and nutrients, helps flush toxins, nourish your skin, and so much more!

Food & Digestion

Digestion... where to begin! If you're not breaking down the food you eat, then you're not absorbing all the necessary vitamins and minerals, and your body will gradually begin to malfunction, causing a myriad of health issues, and eventually chronic diseases.

Vitamins & Minerals

Important for 1,000's of reactions, vitamins and minerals nourish your body & mind. They are factors and co-factors in thinking, talking, digesting, moving, sleeping, breathing, happiness & more!

A note on Vitamin B12: Modern day hygiene and agricultural practices minimize exposure to bacteria, the sole source of B12. Up to 15% of the population is B12 deficient.1 Plus, as we age, our bodies become more and more deficient in this important vitamin.2 Certain foods are fortified with B12, such as cereals and nutritional yeast, check nutrition labels to be sure. It's important to have your Vitamin B12 levels checked regularly, especially as we age.

Movement

Movement that's appropriate for your health & lifestyle needs to be part of every day, whether it's walking the dog, going for a bicycle ride, dancing, hula hooping or whatever you enjoy, just be sure to Move! It's not simply important for physique and increased stamina, movement is the mechanical "push" our Lymphatic System needs to remove bacteria, viruses, and toxins from our bodies.

Relaxation

Doesn't matter what or how, as long as you find time to relax daily. Eustress, short-term, beneficial stress, such as "Fight or Flight" response, giving a presentation, aerobic exercise, etc., is necessary and safe. However, Distress, long-term, chronic stress, such as constant worry, troubled relationships, financial problems, etc., can cause a body to breakdown. So, put aside at least 30 minutes a day to chill, and if you can, relax on and off throughout the day!

Fun!

Whatever floats your boat, makes you laugh and smile, entertains you. No matter what it is... have some FUN!

Note: Social isolation can have devastating emotional, psychological, and physical consequences, and can sometimes happen when going outside what's perceived as "normal" (ie. Vegan, Keto, Religious or Political Beliefs, Loss of Partner, etc.). Spend quality time with loved ones, friends, and people you meet who share your interests, and if you know someone who is alone, please check in on them by calling or stopping by, and maybe play a game of cribbage while you're there!

Sunshine

Just like veggies in a garden, your body needs sunshine to grow and thrive. We get Vitamin D from the sun, and it's important for immune function, calcium absorption, healthy bones, modulation of cell growth, and reduction of inflammation. So, get outside and enjoy the sun on exposed skin for 20 - 30 minutes daily. Be cautious not to get a sunburn, but a pale pink equals adequate Vitamin D.

Note: Be sure to have your Vitamin D levels checked throughout the year, especially during the winter months.
